19 Apr What’s lurking behind your walls?
Do you know what’s behind your walls? It’s important to regularly inspect wall cavities and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of those living in the home.
The types of damage that can be hidden behind the walls include:
Water Damage: if there is a leak in a pipe or from the roof that penetrates the wall cavity, it can cause water damage to the drywall, insulation, and wood framing.
Mold & Mildew Growth: moisture in the wall cavity can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, which can spread quickly and cause health problems for those living in the home.
Pest Infestation: wall cavities can be a prime spot for pests, like rodents and insects to make their homes. They can cause damage to the wood framing and insulation, as well as pose health risks.
Electrical Hazards: if there are electrical wires running through the wall cavity, damage to the insultation or framing can expose the wires and create a potential electrical hazard.
Structural Damage: if the wall cavity is compromised, it can weaken the structural integrity of the building and potentially cause a collapse.
This photo shows the damage that can be occurring inside wall cavities with little evidence to the naked eye. Small ‘tell-signs’ such as a musty smell, discolouration of the paint, mould, and debris coming out from under the skirting can mean sinister things may be happening inside the wall cavities of the home. This photo shows the very wet and mouldy timber frame with some sections so rotten that they resemble compost. After years of wet weather, failed membranes and poor building practices this sight is quite common to the ProBuilder team.
