Kitchen Benchtop Considerations From July 2024

One of the key considerations when renovating your kitchen is what type of benchtop you will get.  There are a range of materials available and often people will consider the durability, aesthetics and of course price.  However, another thing to be aware of is that from July 1st 2024, Australia will ban the use of engineered stone that contains silica. This is a material commonly used for kitchen benchtops.

The silica has been found to cause Silicosis, a lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust, which occurs when the material is cut to the required shape for each project.

When the product is installed there are no health risks associated with the product.

After July 1st engineered stone will
still be available but it will have 0% silica.

We had a chat with our kitchen designer & cabinetmaker about the alternative products that will be available and Larry has reassured us that engineered stone with 0% silica will deliver the same quality, durability and will maintain its diverse range of colours and styles. However, due to the absence of silica, the stone may exhibit a slightly lighter or brighter shade.
